Following in the wake of the historic arrival of European colonialism to the island, corporations have used  dubious treaties and taken advantage of the ignorance of the the people to pave the way for the consumption of the island’s resources for their own benefit and profit. Foreign multinational entities have been able to setup their own operations without any regard for the well being of the land, on which the people depend upon for their health and livelihood.

A perfect example are the now familiar reforestation programs, where healthy, wild forests are cleared in an replaced timber forests programs and grazing lands for livestock. This so called “reforestation program” is nothing but a deception, because the multinationals take large tracts of land to plant monocultures of pine and other non-native trees, which will be harvested for export within 15-25 years, leaving the land dry and poisoned by the resins from the trees.
